biecht* [belijdenis (van zonden)] {oudnederlands begihte 901-1000, middelnederlands biachte, biecht(e) 1201-1250} we hebben met een tweelettergrepig woord te doen, een samenstelling van bi- [bij] + een simplex dat voorkomt als gicht(e), gechte, gifte [bekentenis, in rechte afgelegde verklaring], vgl. oudhoogduits bigiht, oudfries biiecht, biecht, oudsaksisch bigihto; van middelnederlands gien [een verklaring afleggen, bekennen], vgl. oudnederlands gian [bekennen], oudhoogduits gehan, jehan [idem]; buiten het germ. latijn iocus [scherts], van een i.-e. stam met de betekenis ‘spreken’, vgl. gêne. Het woord biecht is een vertalende ontlening van latijn confessio, van confitēri [bekennen].

This funny word comes from the Ancient Greek word for onion, bolbas. In the early 1800s, the word was applied to scientific instruments of a similar shape, including the thermometer bulb and the light bulb. It still hasn't found a word to rhyme with though.
